How to Convert Hourly Pay to Annual Salary

By the Calculator.hair team · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer

To convert hourly pay to an annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work in a year. A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour equals $52,000 a year, $4,333 a month and $1,000 a week. A quick shortcut: double the hourly rate and add three zeros ($25 becomes about $50,000).

Key takeaways

  • Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks; full time is usually 2,080 hours.
  • $15 an hour is $31,200 a year, $25 is $52,000 and $50 is $104,000 at 40 hours a week.
  • Each week of unpaid time off cuts a full-time salary by 40 times the hourly rate.
  • Overtime at 1.5 times pay raises annual earnings: 5 extra hours a week at $25 adds $9,750 a year.

What is the hourly to salary formula?

Annual salary equals hourly rate times hours worked per week times weeks worked per year. For a standard full-time job that is rate × 40 × 52, or rate × 2,080.

The same idea gives every other pay period. Weekly pay is rate × weekly hours. Monthly pay is annual pay ÷ 12, not weekly pay × 4, because a month averages 4.33 weeks. Biweekly pay is annual ÷ 26 and semi-monthly pay is annual ÷ 24.

Our salary calculator does these conversions in both directions and can adjust for unpaid holidays and vacation days.

  • Annual = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
  • Monthly = annual ÷ 12
  • Biweekly = annual ÷ 26
  • Weekly = hourly rate × hours per week
  • Hourly from salary = annual ÷ (hours per week × 52)

How much is $25 an hour annually?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $25 an hour is $52,000 a year before taxes. That works out to $1,000 a week, $2,000 every two weeks, $2,166.67 twice a month and $4,333.33 a month.

Two things change that figure. Part-time hours scale it down in proportion: at 30 hours a week, $25 an hour is $39,000 a year. Unpaid time off also lowers it: with 10 unpaid holidays and 15 unpaid vacation days (25 days, or 200 hours), $25 an hour comes to $47,000. If your employer pays for holidays and vacation, use the full 2,080 hours.

After taxes, $52,000 is less. For a single filer in 2026 with no pre-tax deductions and no state income tax, our take-home pay calculator puts it at about $43,962 a year, or $1,690.85 per biweekly paycheck. See how to calculate take-home pay for the steps.

How much is $15 to $60 an hour per year?

At 40 hours a week, annual pay runs from $31,200 at $15 an hour to $124,800 at $60 an hour. The last column assumes 10 unpaid days off a year (2,000 paid hours), which fits a job that does not pay for holidays. All figures are before tax and come from our salary calculator.

Is there a quick way to estimate salary from hourly pay?

Yes: double the hourly rate and multiply by 1,000. $20 an hour becomes roughly $40,000 a year and $35 an hour becomes roughly $70,000.

The shortcut works because it assumes 2,000 hours a year, which is 40 hours a week for 50 weeks. It runs about 4% low for someone paid for all 52 weeks (the exact figure is 2,080 hours) and is close to right for someone with two unpaid weeks off. For the reverse, halve the salary and drop three zeros: $60,000 a year is about $30 an hour, and exactly $28.85 at 2,080 hours.

How do you convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by 2,080 for a full-time job. A $60,000 salary is $28.85 an hour, $1,153.85 a week and $5,000 a month.

This matters when comparing a salaried offer with an hourly one. Salaried employees who are exempt from overtime may work more than 40 hours without extra pay, which lowers their true hourly rate. Someone earning $60,000 who regularly works 50 hours a week earns $23.08 per hour actually worked ($60,000 ÷ 2,600 hours).

How does overtime change annual pay?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. At $25 an hour, the overtime rate is $37.50.

Worked example: at $25 an hour with 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours a week, weekly pay is $1,000 + (5 × $37.50) = $1,187.50. Over 52 weeks that is $61,750 a year, or $9,750 more than a straight 40-hour schedule. The average across all 45 hours is $26.39 an hour. The overtime calculator handles other multipliers such as double time, and the time card calculator totals clock-in and clock-out times into weekly hours.

Some states add daily overtime rules. California, for example, requires overtime for hours over 8 in a workday, so check your state labor department's rules if you work long shifts.

Overtime hours per week at $25/hourWeekly payAnnual pay (52 weeks)
0$1,000.00$52,000
5$1,187.50$61,750
10$1,375.00$71,500

What else should you count when comparing hourly and salaried jobs?

Gross pay is only part of compensation. Paid time off, health insurance, retirement matching and overtime eligibility can be worth thousands of dollars a year. Points to compare:

  • Paid holidays and vacation: an hourly job with 10 unpaid days earns 4% less than the 2,080-hour figure.
  • Overtime eligibility: hourly and most lower-paid salaried workers are non-exempt and earn 1.5× pay over 40 hours.
  • Employer 401(k) match: a 4% match on $52,000 adds $2,080 a year.
  • Health insurance premiums: the employee share is deducted from each paycheck.
  • Schedule stability: variable hours make annual hourly income harder to predict.

Frequently asked questions

How much is $20 an hour a year?

$20 an hour is $41,600 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or $3,467 a month. With 10 unpaid days off it is $40,000.

How many work hours are in a year?

A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. Subtracting 10 holidays and 15 vacation days (200 hours) leaves 1,880 hours actually worked. The federal government uses 2,087 hours, the average over a 28-year calendar cycle, to set hourly rates for its own employees.

How much is $30 an hour annually?

$30 an hour is $62,400 a year at 40 hours a week, $5,200 a month and $1,200 a week before taxes.

What is the salary calculation formula for part-time work?

Multiply the hourly rate by your actual weekly hours and by 52. At $25 an hour and 30 hours a week, that is $25 × 30 × 52 = $39,000 a year.

Is monthly pay hourly rate times 160 hours?

No, 160 hours (4 weeks) undercounts. A month averages 173.33 work hours (2,080 ÷ 12), so $25 an hour is $4,333 a month, not $4,000.
