Douyin vs TikTok: What's Different When Downloading Videos?
By the Calculator.hair team · Updated · 5 min read
Short answer
Douyin and TikTok look alike and share a parent company, ByteDance, but they're separate apps with no access to each other's content. For downloading, the main difference is that a Douyin post has its own link, so use a tool that supports Douyin links. A TikTok downloader may not recognize them. On both apps, private posts stay out of reach, and saving a video doesn't let you repost it.
Key takeaways
- Douyin and TikTok are separate services, so a video on one isn't automatically available on the other.
- Douyin links use their own addresses, such as v.douyin.com, so a tool has to support them specifically.
- TikTok's help pages say creators control whether their videos can be downloaded in the app.
- Download.fan says videos saved from the Douyin app carry a logo and creator ID, and TikTok says its downloads may include a watermark and username.
- The rules on reuse are similar in practice: a saved file doesn't include permission to repost it.
Are Douyin and TikTok the same app?
No. ByteDance launched Douyin in China in 2016, and TikTok followed as its international counterpart. Douyin is often called the "Chinese TikTok," even though it came first. The two have almost the same interface, but neither has access to the other's content. A report from the U.S. Congressional Research Service also notes they reportedly use separate algorithms tailored to their own audiences.
This matters for downloading because you can't assume a Douyin video exists on TikTok, or that a link from one will work with tools made for the other. The creator would need to post on both for the same clip to appear in both places.
What are the main differences for downloading?
This table compares what each service or the sources below say. Features in both apps can change, so check the current version.
| Douyin | TikTok | |
|---|---|---|
| Link format | v.douyin.com, douyin.com or iesdouyin.com | TikTok's own links |
| Share text | Chinese text with a link inside, per download.fan | Depends on how you share |
| In-app saving | Download.fan says app-saved videos carry a logo and creator ID | TikTok says downloads may include a watermark and username, depending on the creator's settings |
| Creator control | Not confirmed by the sources we used | TikTok says creators can turn video downloads on or off |
| Private posts | Download.fan says they won't download | TikTok says they can't be downloaded |
| Availability | Mainly China | Not available in mainland China |
Will a TikTok downloader work on Douyin videos?
Don't assume it will. A tool has to recognize a site's links and know how to fetch from it. Some tools support both services, but support for one doesn't prove support for the other. The simple test is to paste a Douyin link and see whether the tool accepts it, or to check whether the page says it handles Douyin.
The download.fan download douyin video tool says it's built for Douyin links and accepts share text as well as douyin.com and iesdouyin.com addresses. Its pages also say no Chinese phone number or VPN is needed. Those are its own claims, and you can check them with a public video you have permission to save.
If your link is being rejected, make sure you've copied the right kind. Our guide to copying a Douyin share link explains what to look for.
How does the watermark differ?
Each service treats its own downloads a little differently.
- TikTok: Its help center says downloaded videos may include the TikTok watermark and creator's username, depending on the creator's settings.
- Douyin: Download.fan says Douyin stamps a logo and creator ID on videos saved from the app, and says it fetches an unbranded copy that Douyin also stores. We haven't independently confirmed that from Douyin itself.
A watermark does more than brand the video: it also shows where the clip came from and who made it. If you save a copy without one, credit the creator yourself when you have permission to share it. Our guide to watermark-free Douyin downloads explains what to expect.
Who decides whether a video can be downloaded?
On TikTok, the answer is clear. TikTok's help center says creators can turn the video downloads setting off, which stops others from downloading their posted videos and photos through the app. If the option is missing from the share menu, the creator doesn't allow it. Private accounts and accounts of users under 16 have it off by default, and it can't be turned on.
The sources we used don't confirm how Douyin's equivalent setting works, so we won't guess. Download.fan's limits are that private, friends-only and deleted videos and live streams won't download, and that some videos are blocked outside mainland China.
Even when a third-party tool can reach a public post, consider what the creator wanted. If they've turned off downloads or restricted a post, ask them before saving it for anything beyond your own viewing.
Does the audio work the same way?
The extraction idea is similar, but check that your tool supports the service you're using. For Douyin, the download.fan download douyin mp3 page says the MP3 contains the music, voices and effects as heard in the app. It also says a video whose sound was removed for copyright reasons will produce a silent or voices-only MP3.
Music rights are a common source of differences. Download.fan says some Douyin videos are blocked outside mainland China, usually for music licensing. Songs may also be available in one app and not the other, so don't assume a sound you found on Douyin is available on TikTok.
Do the same rules apply when reusing videos?
The services have separate terms, but the practical answer is the same: saving a video doesn't give you the right to repost it. Douyin's user agreement describes a personal, non-commercial licence and restricts unauthorized copying and distribution. Copyright also belongs to the creator or rights holder, wherever the clip was posted.
Moving a Douyin clip to TikTok is still reposting it. Before you do, read how to reuse Douyin clips with permission.
Frequently asked questions
Is Douyin just the Chinese version of TikTok?
That's the common shorthand, but it's incomplete. Douyin launched first, and the two are separate apps from the same parent company. They look similar but don't share content, and they may use separate algorithms.
Can I find a Douyin video on TikTok?
Only if someone has posted it there. The two services don't have access to each other's content. A creator may post on both, but you shouldn't assume they do. Be wary of reposts by other accounts, since they may not be the original creator's.
Do I need a Chinese phone number to save Douyin videos?
Download.fan says its tool doesn't need a Chinese phone number, a Douyin account or a VPN, and that most public videos work from anywhere. Some videos are still blocked outside mainland China.
Can one tool download from both Douyin and TikTok?
Some can, but check for each service. Paste a public link from each or read the tool's supported sites. Don't assume that support for TikTok covers Douyin links.
