Army Body Fat Calculator
Press Calculate to see the results.
This Army body fat calculator applies the one-site abdominal tape equation adopted by the US Army in 2023 to estimate your body fat percentage and check it against the Army standard for your age and sex.
Enter your sex, age, weight in pounds and abdominal circumference measured at the level of the navel. The calculator estimates body fat with the Army's one-site tape equation and compares it with the maximum body fat allowed for your age group. It is a self-check only; official results come from measurements taken by trained personnel.

The US Army Body Composition Program (ABCP), governed by Army Regulation 600-9, sets body fat standards because excess body fat is linked to lower physical performance, higher injury rates and long-term health problems. Soldiers are first screened against height and weight tables at regular weigh-ins. Those who are over the screening weight for their height are then assessed for body fat with a tape test.
For decades the Army used a multi-site tape method based on the US Navy circumference equations: neck and waist for men, and neck, waist and hips for women. Soldiers criticized the method as inconsistent and unfair to some body types, particularly women and muscular soldiers. In 2022 and 2023 the Army studied a large group of soldiers whose body fat was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and found that a single abdominal measurement, combined with body weight, predicted body fat at least as well as the old method.

Army Directive 2023-11, effective June 2023, made this one-site abdominal tape test the standard. The tape is placed horizontally around the abdomen at the level of the navel and read after a normal exhalation. Measurements are taken three times and averaged. The same directive allowed soldiers who are not within standard after the tape test to request a more precise assessment, such as DXA, where available.
The directive also exempted soldiers who score 540 or more on the Army Combat Fitness Test, with at least 80 points in each event, from the body fat standard, recognizing that very fit soldiers with more muscle may exceed the screening tables without carrying excess fat.
Soldiers who exceed the body fat standard are enrolled in the ABCP. The program provides nutrition and exercise counseling and requires monthly progress checks; a satisfactory rate of progress is losing about 3 to 8 pounds or 1% body fat per month. Soldiers in the program are flagged, which blocks promotions, schools and some assignments until they meet the standard, and repeated failure can lead to separation. Recruits entering the Army must meet separate accession standards.
Because the equation relies on just two measurements, small errors in taping change the result: each inch of abdominal circumference adds about 2 percentage points for men and about 1.3 for women. Measure on bare skin, keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin, and take the reading after breathing out normally. The Army's own lookup charts report whole percentages, so this calculator rounds the estimate before comparing it with the standard.
Body fat standards are set by policy and can change. Check the latest version of AR 600-9 and any newer Army directives, or ask your unit's master fitness trainer or ABCP manager, for the rules that apply to you.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Army measure body fat?
Since June 2023 the Army uses a one-site tape test: a single abdominal circumference at the navel combined with body weight in a sex-specific equation.
What is the maximum body fat allowed in the Army?
For men it ranges from 20% at ages 17–20 to 26% at 40 and over; for women from 30% to 36%.
Who is exempt from the Army tape test?
Soldiers who score 540 or more on the ACFT who also earn 80 or more points on every event do not have to meet the body fat standard under Army Directive 2023-11.
What happens if I exceed the body fat standard?
You are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program, which includes counseling and monthly checks, and are flagged from favorable actions such as promotion until you meet the standard.
What is the Army body fat formula?
With weight in pounds and abdominal circumference at the navel in inches, men use BF% = −26.97 − 0.12 × weight + 1.99 × abdomen and women use BF% = −9.15 − 0.015 × weight + 1.27 × abdomen. A 165-pound man with a 36-inch abdomen comes out at about 24.9%, which rounds to 25%. The result is rounded to a whole percentage before it is compared with the standard.
