Age Difference Calculator

This age difference calculator finds the exact gap between two birth dates in years, months and days, and in total weeks and days, and shows each person's age on any date.
An age gap calculator answers a simple question exactly: how much older is one person than another? Instead of subtracting birth years, which can be off by almost a full year, it compares the full dates of birth and reports the difference in years, months and days, together with the total number of months, weeks and days between the two birthdays.
How to Use the Age Difference Calculator
Enter a name and a date of birth for each person; the names are optional and only label the results. The order does not matter: the calculator works out who is older and measures from the earlier birth date to the later one. The Show Ages on date defaults to today and adds each person's current age, the ratio of their ages and the popular half-your-age-plus-seven benchmark. Change it to see how old both people were, or will be, on another date, such as a wedding day.
The tool works for any two people: partners, siblings, a parent and child, or historical figures. For dates before the Gregorian calendar was adopted in a given country, remember that old records may use the Julian calendar, which can shift a birth date by 10 to 13 days.
How the Age Gap Is Calculated
Take the default example. Person A was born on June 15, 1990 and Person B on February 3, 1994. Counting whole years from June 15, 1990 reaches June 15, 1993; whole months from there reach January 15, 1994, which is 7 months; and January 15 to February 3 is 19 days. The age difference is therefore 3 years, 7 months and 19 days. Counted in days, it is 1,329 days, or 189 weeks and 6 days, about 3.64 years.
The gap in years, months and days never changes: on every date after both were born, the difference between their ages is the same. What does change is how the gap feels. Three and a half years is huge between a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old but barely noticeable between people of 36 and 32, which is why the age ratio shrinks toward 1 as both people grow older.
Age gap = later birth date − earlier birth date, counted in whole years, then whole months, then days
When the day of the month of the later date is smaller, a month is borrowed using the length of the month before it, as in an age calculation.
The Half-Your-Age-Plus-Seven Rule
A widely quoted rule of thumb for dating says the youngest partner a person should consider is half their age plus seven years. For a 36-year-old that is 25; for a 50-year-old, 32. Turned around, the oldest acceptable partner is twice the difference between your age and seven: for a 25-year-old, 2 × (25 − 7) = 36. The rule appears in early 20th-century writing and has been repeated ever since, but it is a social convention, not a scientific or legal standard, and surveys suggest many people's real preferences do not follow it neatly.
The calculator shows the benchmark for the older person's age only as a point of reference once the older person is at least 14. Laws on the age of consent and marriage are separate, set by each country or state, and are not related to this rule.
Common Uses for an Age Difference
Beyond relationships, age gaps come up in many practical settings. Parents compare the spacing between siblings, schools and sports leagues group children by birth date cutoffs, and genealogists use the gap between parents and children to check whether a family tree is plausible. Some pension, survivor benefit and annuity calculations also depend on the age difference between spouses, because the expected payout period depends on both ages.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the age gap between two people?
Compare the two full dates of birth: count the whole years from the earlier birthday, then the whole months, then the remaining days. Subtracting only the birth years can be wrong by up to a year.
Does the age difference change over time?
No. The gap in years, months and days stays the same for life. Only the ratio between the two ages changes, moving closer to 1 as both people get older.
What is the half-your-age-plus-seven rule?
It is an informal guideline that the youngest partner someone should date is half their age plus seven. It is a social convention with no scientific or legal basis.
What is the average age gap between couples?
In many Western countries, husbands are on average about two to three years older than their wives in opposite-sex marriages, though the spread around that average is wide and it varies across countries and generations.
Can I find how old both people were on a specific date?
Yes. Change the Show Ages on date to any day after the younger person was born to see both ages on that date.
